You're married, what's next? How to apply for your Commonwealth Marriage Certificate

The Perth Marriage Office will submit all of your marriage paperwork to the WA Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM).

Once BDM receives the paperwork, they will register your marriage in their system.

This process generally takes 4–6 weeks and an application and additional fee of $58 must be paid to Births, Deaths and Marriage before they will issue your certificate.

Once your paperwork has been lodged with BDM:
• We cannot assist, follow up, or expedite the process
• We do not receive updates from BDM
• Contacting us will not speed things up

How to apply for your Official Certificate

The Official Marriage Certificate required for legal use is issued by BDM only after your marriage has been registered.

You must apply for this certificate yourself and make payment – We cannot apply on your behalf.

Applications can be made online at: https://online-rbdm.justice.wa.gov.au

BDM will often advise that they have not yet received or processed your paperwork. This usually means your documents are waiting in their queue due to processing backlogs, which are especially common during peak wedding season.

For this reason, please do not call or email your Marriage Celebrant or the Perth Marriage Office, as we are unable to help once the paperwork has been submitted.

Your Official Marriage Certificate may be required for:
• Visa applications
• Changing your name
• Loans, mortgages and tax purposes
• Proof of identity
• Health benefits

Congratulations again on your marriage, and thank you for allowing us to be part of your special day!
